Sailink Privacy Policy
Sailink (sailink.org) helps sailors and boat owners find each other. This policy explains what personal information the site handles, why, who else is involved and what you can ask us to do with it.
Who we are
Sailink is run by PeerSpots Lda, a company registered in Portugal, which is responsible for the personal information described here (the “data controller”). Questions or requests: hi@sailink.org.
The short version
- You can browse Sailink without giving us anything. There are no accounts, no logins and no payments.
- We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t sell or share your information for advertising.
- A listing is public. What you write in it, its photos and its contact email are shown to anyone who visits the site.
- The newsletter is optional. Your email address goes to our newsletter provider, and every issue has an unsubscribe link.
- To have a listing changed or deleted, email hi@sailink.org.
Listings
When you post a boat or a sailor listing, we store what you enter in the form:
- the title, the description (“About you” for sailors), where you’re sailing from and, for boats, the destination, trip length and boat type;
- whether costs are shared or whether you’re a couple;
- your contact email;
- up to four photos.
What’s public. Everything above is published on the listing’s page straight away. Listing pages can appear in search engines while they’re live. The contact email is behind a “Show email” button to make it harder for bots to collect, but anyone who visits the page can see it. Consider using an email address you’re happy to share, and don’t put information you want to keep private in the description or photos.
Photos. We convert every photo to a new image file and remove its hidden data (EXIF and similar, which can include the place where a photo was taken and the camera used) before we store it.
Edit link. After posting, you get a private link that lets you edit or delete your listing for 24 hours. We store only a scrambled fingerprint of that link, not the link itself, so we can’t look it up or resend it.
How long listings stay up.
- A listing is live for 60 days.
- After that it’s marked as expired. The page stays up, without the contact email, and asks search engines not to index it. We keep the email in our database with the listing.
- A listing deleted with its edit link, or by us, disappears from the site at once.
- If you’d like an expired or deleted listing erased from our database too, email us and we’ll do it.
Listings from the old site. Listings posted on the previous version of Sailink were moved here with their text, photos and contact email. They follow the same rules: expired listings show no email, and we’ll change or delete any of them on request.
Review. We read new listings after they go live and remove ones that are spam, unlawful or not about sailing.
The newsletter
If you sign up for the newsletter, we send your email address to EmailOctopus, the service that stores our list and sends the newsletter. The newsletter has boat and crew listings and sailing tips. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link in every email; we keep your address only while you’re subscribed. EmailOctopus may record whether newsletter emails are opened or clicked.
The website itself sends no email. We never use the contact email in a listing for the newsletter or any other mailing.
Keeping out spam
- Cloudflare Turnstile. The listing forms use Cloudflare Turnstile, a security check that replaces “I’m not a robot” puzzles. It looks at your connection and browser to tell people from bots, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy.
- Rate limits. To stop one connection from posting too much, we keep a one-way, salted fingerprint of your IP address with the time of each listing, edit or newsletter signup. We don’t store the IP address itself, and the fingerprints are deleted after two days.
When you visit the site
- Hosting. Sailink runs on Cloudflare, which delivers the pages and stores the database and photos. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and basic request details (such as your browser type and the page asked for) to serve the site and protect it from attacks.
- Cookies. Sailink sets no cookies for visitors. The only cookie is a sign-in cookie for the Sailink team’s admin area.
- Fonts. The site’s font is served from sailink.org itself, not from Google Fonts or another font service.
- Maps. Marina pages show an OpenStreetMap map. When the map comes into view, your browser loads the map code from cdnjs (run by Cloudflare) and the map images from the OpenStreetMap Foundation, which receives your IP address. See the OpenStreetMap Foundation’s privacy policy.
Marina information
The marina pages list marinas’ public business details, such as their name, address, website, email and phone number, gathered from public sources such as the marinas’ own websites and OpenStreetMap. Photos are either Creative Commons photos, credited to their authors with their licence, or the marina’s own photo, credited and linked to its website. If you run a marina and want a detail corrected or a photo removed, write to hi@sailink.org and we’ll do it.
When you email us
If you write to us, we use your message and email address only to reply and to handle your request, and we keep them only as long as that requires.
Why we use your information
If you’re in the EU, the UK or another place with similar laws, these are our legal grounds:
- Listings: to provide the service you ask for when you post one.
- Newsletter: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
- Spam protection, security and the marina pages: our legitimate interest in running a safe, useful site.
Who else handles your information
- Cloudflare: hosting, database, photo storage, Turnstile and our admin sign-in.
- EmailOctopus: the newsletter, if you join it.
- cdnjs and the OpenStreetMap Foundation: for the marina maps, as described in “When you visit the site”.
These providers may process information in countries other than yours, with the safeguards that data protection laws require, such as standard contractual clauses. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect people from fraud or harm.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it, including erasing a listing completely;
- stop using it, or object to how we use it.
Email hi@sailink.org from the address in your listing or newsletter signup, so we know it’s yours. We reply within one month. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority: the one where you live, or Portugal’s CNPD.
Children
Sailink isn’t aimed at children. If you think a child has posted a listing, tell us and we’ll remove it.
Changes to this policy
When we change how Sailink handles personal information, we update this page and the date below.
